Overview of Lesson Plan:
In this lesson, students will better understand how to successfully use the given vocabulary to build sentences, focusing on how to select the keywords that will lead to the best answer on certain topic given. The idea of this learning object is to make grammar exercises into a game. When teaching the basics in English, there are many simple structures that need to be learned. These structures need to be practiced so that the learner can form them automatically. Thus, these edutainment learning objects are especially appropriate when learning them. The learner’s task is to put together grammatically correct sentences by choosing a word or phrase from each of the three layers of the hamburger. The sentences also have to describe the small picture on the screen, which changes with each exercise. If the sentences are put together correctly, the learner will hear it read aloud. For each correct sentence, the learner will receive a small hamburger in the feedback area. The learner knows how many points he/she has from the number of hamburgers on the screen.
Objectives:
Form sentences from chunks available from the Learning Object.
Investigate the available word information on a specific topic
Create sentences from a list of keywords and phrases.
Determine whether a word or phrase is appropriate by trying it out.
Decide whether to choose one word or phrase rather than another.
Resources / Materials:
Computers with the Learning Object available on the school site or on a floppy disc.
Computers with Internet connection and the Learning Object available online.
Activities / Procedures:
Discuss the merits of learning grammar by using a game rather than doing written exercises from a book or page.
Show the students on a large computer screen how the game works.
Have the students work in pairs and take turns using the Learning Object.
Further Discussions:
Discuss at the end of the lesson how the students did and the merits of learning using a learning object such as a game to learn the use of grammar and sentence building.
Discuss any problems they encountered and some drawbacks to this kind of learning.Evaluation / Assessment:
Students will be evaluated for following instructions, participating in the discussions and for doing the tasks.
Extension Activities:
Teach someone else (a family member, friend, or younger student) how to write sentences using the game. Make up your own game to show them.
Explain to others what you did during the lesson and how you felt about it.
